The C.T. Lamont Primary Health Care Research Centre is a Centre within the Élisabeth Bruyère
Research Institute and is the research arm of the Department of Family Medicine of the
University of
Ottawa.
What is Primary Health Care?
Primary health care is usually your first encounter with the health care system when you need care or advice. Primary health care could be visiting your family physician, talking to your pharmacist, or calling a toll-free health advice line to talk to a health care professional. Because it is the point of entry into the health care system, every Canadian is connected to primary health care many times over the course of his/her life.
Origins
The Centre was established in 2000 thanks to a generous donation from Dr. Campbell T. Lamont, a former Chair of the Department of Family Medicine,
University of
Ottawa (1975-1981). The Centre is now one of the largest primary health care research centres in
Canada.
Location
Its location in
Canada’s capital offers great opportunities for developing leaders in health services research and amplifies its ability to influence decision-makers and health care policy. Projects and investigators are located mainly at the Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital, with some situated at other
Ottawa locations. Several investigators have cross-appointments at the
University of
Ottawa’s Institute for Population Health and the Ottawa Health Research Institute.
Research Focus
The Centre’s research focus is practice-relevant research on the organization and delivery of primary health care. Within this focus, opportunities are prioritized if they apply innovative mixed methodologies and build collaborative relationships with stakeholders.
Vision and Core Ideology
The core purpose of the Centre’s work is to “Drive progress in primary health care.” The essence of the Centre’s vision is to be an international leading research centre in primary health care services. Respected for its rigorous research, integrity and methods, the Centre will inform policy-makers, practices and academics on how best to deliver effective, efficient and equitable primary health care and thus drive innovative and relevant progress in this field.
Our core values reflect how we work:
Integrity
We are ethical, accountable and honest. We deliver excellent quality.
Innovation
We seek insight and push the boundaries of scientific discovery. We are open-minded. We deliver impact.
Collaboration
We welcome the sharing of ideas and embrace diversity. Our whole is greater than the sum of our parts.
Respect
We build meaningful relationships with equity, understanding and caring.
Relevance
Our research is useful, practical and meaningful.
Success
Dr. William Hogg, Director of the Centre, was recognized as Family Medicine Researcher of the Year 2006 by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. This award recognizes a family medicine researcher who has made original contributions to research and knowledge building for family medicine in
Canada.
From 2004 to 2006, the Centre successfully conducted projects funded by 16 different grants from the Ontario Primary Health Care Transition Fund (PHCTF). The research being supported by this fund is expected to enable sustainable change to primary health care organization, funding and delivery, which will result in improved access, accountability and integration of services. We have since been awarded several new grants, which are allowing us to sustain our teams and to continue in our quest to drive progress in primary health care.
