FAQs

Q1:  When can I be considered for admission to the palliative care unit?

A1:  If you are living with an advanced disease that cannot be cured and require daily assessment and interventions to address pain and other symptoms or require end-of-life care.

Q2:  How can I be admitted to the palliative care unit?

A2:  A referral form must be completed by your physician or other health care provider (ie. social worker or Community Care Access (CCAC) case manager). Each application is prioritized based on patient care needs.

Q3:  What is the palliative care unit environment like?

A3:  The palliative care unit consists of ward (three-bed), semi-private (two-bed) and private rooms. There are family rooms, kitchens and a multi-faith room for use for patients and their families. There is a resource room which has internet access and a library.

Q4:  Can I be discharged from the palliative care unit?

A4:  Yes. Our interprofessional team ensures appropriate and efficient discharges for patients no longer requiring the level of care provided on our palliative care unit.

Q5:  What does a room in the palliative care unit cost?

A5:  Provincial health insurance (i.e., OHIP) covers the cost of a ward room. If you have additional private health insurance coverage, you should confirm the level of accommodation covered by your policy.

If you wish to upgrade your accommodation, additional costs will apply. Please contact the Accounts Receivable and Trust Office located on the main floor of the Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital (room 140 or by telephone: 613-562-6262, extension 6345).

Q6:  What are the palliative care unit’s visiting hours?

A6:  There are no set visiting hours. Access to the building at night between 8:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. is limited to the main entrance at 43 Bruyère Street.

Q7:  Can family members stay overnight in the unit?

A7:  Families are always welcome to stay overnight. However, due to safety concerns, we ask that only one family member stay in your room.

Q8:  Can pets be brought in to the unit?

A8:  Pets may be brought to visit, but the pet owner must sign a form to confirm that the pet’s immunization is up-to-date before visiting. Only cats and dogs may visit. To request a form, please speak to the unit clerk.
