Mother Élisabeth Bruyère’s Compassion and Charisma Have No Borders

On August 11, 2009, more than a dozen Sisters of Charity of Ottawa and Associates gathered for a guided tour of the Museum of Civilisation in Gatineau, Québec. They were not just from Ottawa or even just Canada; they were from countries including Malawi, Zambia, Lesotho and Japan.

The group enjoyed a guide tour of the museum and had a chance to vote for Mother Élisabeth Bruyère to have a place in the “Face to Face” exhibit in The Canadian Personalities Hall of Fame in the museum.

Although the group members are from different countries they all share a devotion to Mother Bruyère.

“Several of the Associates and Sisters of Charity who visited the Canadian Personalities Hall of Fame commented that Élisabeth Bruyère, a pioneer in a city in the making, was a woman of vision, soul, audacity and courage. Thanks to her determination, she was able to overcome insurmountable challenges in order to achieve her projects,” said Sister Agnès Gagnon, one of the Sisters of Charity leading the visit. “They felt that her great compassion in light of all human suffering remains inspirational today.”

Mother Bruyère was an extraordinary leader who founded the first hospital in Ottawa in1845, as well as an orphanage, school and a home for the aged.

Her legacy of compassion and caring continues to inspire people in the Ottawa region through the dedications of the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa and more than 2,800 health care workers (volunteers, staff and physicians) at Bruyère Continuing Care.
