The Bruyère Research Institute (BRI) supports investigators who contribute to a better, more responsive health care system that delivers the best care to patients and families. BRI is a proud partner of Bruyère Continuing Care, the University of Ottawa and others and provides solutions to improve the health and health care of aging and frail Canadians. Dr. Simone Dahrouge’s research is in the area of population health and primary care, more specifically focusing on understanding how primary health care services can be organized to optimize the quality and equity of the care delivered.

 

The involvement of patients in informing research studies across their cycle helps ensure that what is being studied is relevant and any potential recommendation emanating from the work is acceptable to patients. Patient involvement leads to better quality healthcare, including care that meets patients’ needs and results in patient-oriented outcomes.

 
BRI is currently looking to hire a Research Assistant II to conduct relevant and practical health sciences research related to a provincial Primary Health Care Patient Engagement Initiative (https://www.patientengagement-phcresearch.com/).


Reporting to the Manager of Research Operations, the Research Assistant II is responsible for supporting the activities Primary Health Care Patient Engagement Initiative research team.



Main duties and responsibilities:

Research (70%)

  • Coordinating, editing, and drafting grant applications, ethics applications, abstracts, journal presentations, journal articles, reports, and research protocols with oversight of Investigator
  • Using established or developing appropriate search criteria and maintaining a compilation of references
  • Researching and summarizing scientific literature
  • Contributing to the development and adaptation of tools and guides regarding Patient Engagement 
  • Coordinating the development of workshops related to patient engagement
  • Assisting Investigator in drafting manuscripts for publication
  • Networking with other groups working in the field of patient engagement
  • Participating in qualitative data collection and analysis activities (i.e.: conducting participant interviews, taking field notes, etc.)
  • Collecting, processing, and coordinating data for research projects
  • Conducting straightforward data analysis using appropriate software: statistical software (SAS, SPSS and Excel) or qualitative software (Nvivo, ATLAS.ti)
 
Administration (30%)
  • Creating presentations and posters in Publisher and PowerPoint using existing research materials
  • Organizing, editing, and drafting correspondence to publishers, grantors, contractors, and professional accreditation bodies
  • Tracking papers in progress, being submitted and published
  • Ensuring that all of the Investigator’s grants, publications, awards, and student information are submitted to the BRI tracking database in a timely manner
  • Organizing and setting up meetings with researchers, support staff, participants and/or external stakeholders
  • Writing and organizing meeting minutes
  • Ensure Research Ethics Board documentation is maintained and updated in a timely manner (e.g. annual renewals, amendments, responses to REBs)
  • Other duties as reasonably assigned 

 

Qualifications:
  • Completion of undergraduate degree in relevant field plus two years’ experience OR a master’s degree in a relevant field
  • Excellent oral and written communication in English is required 
  • Previous experience and/or exposure to health research
  • Knowledge of and experience with qualitative and/or quantitative research methods
  • Critical thinking skills and strong ability to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions 
  • Excellent planning and coordination skills
  • Excellent ability to read and synthesize scientific literature 

 

Additional Skills:

  • Have experience in activities related to patient, family and community engagement in health and/or social services.
