Bruyère Supports New National Standards in Long-Term Care
08/19/2021
The country
has witnessed the devastating impact of COVID-19 on some of our most vulnerable
community members in long-term care homes. These spaces – designed around
communal areas and a shared workforce – are the homes and communities for thousands
of older adults, presenting unique challenges with respect to infection
prevention and control practices.
With
research on long-term
care design already under way, Bruyère continues to respond to the national
need of long-term care homes and remains engaged in the process to advance Infection
Prevention and Control standards with the lessons learned over the course of
the pandemic.
The Canadian
Standards Association (CSA Group) is now developing a new National Standard of
Canada (NSC): Operation and Infection Prevention and Control of Long-Term Care
Homes (CSA Z8004), which will list requirements for safe operating practices
and infection prevention and control in long-term care homes. Heidi Sveistrup,
CEO of the Bruyère Research Institute and CSA Long-term Care Project Advisory
Panel member is encouraging residents, caregivers, and long-term care staff
members alike to contribute.
In
collaboration with Bruyère, Carleton University, and the Ontario Centres for
Learning, Research and Innovation at Bruyère, the CSA Group will be conducting
consultation sessions and inviting community and long-term care stakeholders to
share their experiences and desired outcomes.
