Function Summary
The Cook’s position is responsible to prepare, temper, rethermalize, cook, garnish and serve food to patients, cafeteria and catering clients. The Cook is also responsible for verifying and storing goods into the appropriate area and assists in the maintenance of proper stock levels to meet demand. He/She is committed to living the Mission and Values of Bruyère Continuing Care.
He/She is committed to patient and resident safety, on-going learning and continuous quality improvement.
Required Qualifications- Secondary school diploma
- Completion of recognized Cook/Chef training program of post-secondary level
- Recent food handler’s course from recognized college
- Minimum one (1) year experience as a cook in a cafeteria setting
- Fluent in French and English
- Experience in operating, maintaining and cleaning various type of equipment (fryer, steamer, oven, grill, meat slicer, dishwasher, etc.)
- Ability to perform activities requiring considerable standing, walking, bending, reaching, pulling/pushing and transferring equipment and material including lifting of pans of foods frequently during the day (up to 20 lbs) and to enter refrigerator and freezer on a daily basis
- Must be able to prepare and serve multi-cultural meals according to client requirements

- Strong interpersonal, communication and organization skills
- Ability to perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety act and regulations departmental policies and procedures
- Ability to perform tasks in accordance with the hygiene standards and other standards established by Ottawa Public Health
- Capacity to provide quality client-centered service
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Culinary curiosity and knowledge of recent techniques and trends
- Advanced knowledge of culinary techniques
Preferred qualifications- Ability to review menu with cafeteria supervisor
- Ability to oversee all food preparation such as deli and salad bar while maintaining quality and adequate quantity
- Ability to replace other food service staff when necessary
