The Bruyère Research Institute (BRI) supports investigators who contribute to a better, more responsive health care system that delivers the best care to patients, residents and families. The Institute is a proud partner of Bruyère Continuing Care, the University of Ottawa and others and provides solutions to improve the health and health care of aging and vulnerable Canadians. The Institute’s research focuses primarily on evidence, health system evaluation, brain health, geriatrics and rehabilitation, primary care, palliative care, and global health. www.bruyere.org/briResearch of the TAFETA group, led by Drs. Frank Knoefel and Rafik Goubran, focuses on the use of technology to help older adults to live independently. Their research will help in the development of the new AGE-WELL National Innovation Hub on Sensors and Analytics Monitoring Mobility and Memory (SAM3). BRI is currently looking to hire a Research Assistant II to conduct relevant and practical health sciences research related to technology and aging. The goal of this research is facilitate aging in the home. Main duties and responsibilities:
Research (80%)- Organize and conduct cognitive and functional tests with research participants and gather and organize research data.
- Assist in the implementation of innovative research projects. Prepare and edit correspondence, literature reviews, communications, presentations, scientific posters, abstracts and reports and research protocols.
- Organize, enter and verify data collected, using databases and protocol set up by supervisors. Must ensure quality of data through collection and analysis periods.
- Independently organize data for processing.
- Assist with writing, preparation and submission of ethics submissions, grant proposals, and manuscripts for publication.
- Coordinate and assist in the delivery of meetings and other research-related events.
- Conduct Internet and literature database searches.
- Complete and update research ethics board applications.
- Provide research assistance to ongoing research projects (data collection, analysis, report generation).
- Communicate with multiple stakeholders (researchers, physicians, health planners, volunteers, patient representatives, etc.) to facilitate meetings, events and research projects.
- Conduct and summarize scientific literature searches and reviews.
- Assist with data management and analysis.
- Assist with manuscript writing for publication.
- Conduct data analysis using statistical software (SPSS and Excel)
- Support the planning, execution and monitoring of study progress, coordination and deliverables.
Administration (20%)- Coordinate the work of students in engineering and health sciences on various projects.
- Assist to create presentations and posters in Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation using existing research material.
- Coordinate, organize, and setting up meetings for stakeholders, Co-Investigators, and research staff.
- Prepare and draft meeting agendas and minutes. Maintain and update Research Ethics Board documentation (e.g., annual renewals, amendments, responses to REBs).
- Track papers in progress, being submitted and published. Maintain curriculum vitae of investigators (lifetime and common CV, etc.).
- Support the work of the Research Manager; ensuring projects remain on budget and on time.
This job description is not exhaustive. Additional duties may be added as the projects progress.Qualifications:- Completion of undergraduate degree in relevant field plus two years’ experience
- Previous experience and/or exposure to health research
- Critical thinking skills and strong ability to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
- Excellent ability to read and synthesize scientific literature
- Ability to communicate and interact competently and professionally at all levels within a research environment, including patients.
- Knowledge of research principles, methodology, and procedures.
- Ability to follow data collection and management guidelines.
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision and within a multidisciplinary team.
- Meticulous, detail-oriented, and highly organized.
- Excellent computer skills
- Comfort with and interest in technology, such as sensors and EEG, is a definite plus.
- Positive and facilitative attitude.
- Self-motivated with strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet tight deadlines.
