Temporary full-time, Flexible hours to meet operational needs, 75 hrs/Pay period, 1.0 FTE (Some evening, nights and weekends required).

Salary Scale:

$42.355 to $50.577 / hour, plus a percentage in lieu of benefits

The purpose of the Nursing Practice Leader (NPL) is to enhance nursing practice by developing general and unit based orientation and continuing education related to the needs of the nurses working on a specific unit/program. Reporting to the Director, Nursing Professional Practice, the NPL is responsible for ensuring that nurses work within the College of Nurse's standards, Bruyère Continuing Care’s policies and are using best practice guidelines. The Practice Support Nurses (PSN) on the unit will report directly to the NPL in order to develop and implement education at the bedside. The incumbant will be responsible for all aspects of managing PSN.
The Nursing Practice Leader is responsible for:

Clinical Practice:

  • The NPL is an expert in nursing clinical practice and provides education, coaching and mentoring to assist nursing staff in providing high quality nursing care within their scope of practice. The NPL leads the implementation of evidence-based practice and supports nursing staff to ensure compliance.


  • The NPL assumes a leadership role, in developing and evaluating education required for nurses to provide high quality care that meets the College of Nurses standards, Best Practice Guidelines and the policies and procedures of Bruyère Continuing Care. They lead the development, implementation and evaluation of education.
  • Participates in nurse recruitment, selection, retention, professional development and evaluation of clinical practice.


  • The NPL is responsible for the synthesis of research findings as well as their dissemination and utilization.

Change agent:

  • The NPL acts as a change agent at the unit level by promoting evidence-based nursing practice.


  • The NPL establishes effective collaborative relationships with clinical managers, directors, PSN and other NPL to enhance the practice of nursing at Bruyère.

He/She is committed to patient and resident safety, on-going learning and continuous quality improvement.


  • Registered Nurse (Ontario) with an undergraduate degree in nursing and masters preparation in nursing or in a related health discipline
  • Registration and good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Related certification (ex: CNA certification), preferred
  • Membership in relevant professional association (e.g. Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO), Canadian Nurses Association (CNA))
  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Level C certificate
  • Fluent in English and French
  • Advanced computer skills and medical terminology
  • Minimum of three (3) years of previous nursing leadership experience in a health care setting
  • Minimum of three (3) years of previous experience in a medical, surgical or complex continuing care setting
  • Experience in adult education and program development
  • Evidence of expert level nursing practice skill (experience in advanced nursing practice preferred)


  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, problem solving and decision making skills
  • Capable of working under stress in a constantly changing environment
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Ability to manage human resources
  • Research, teaching and consulting skills
  • Expert communicator
