The Bruyère Research Institute supports investigators who contribute to a better, more responsive health care system that delivers the best care to patients and families. The Institute is a proud partner of Bruyère Continuing Care, the University of Ottawa and others and provides solutions to improve the health and health care of aging and frail Canadians. The Institute’s research focuses primarily on evidence, health system evaluation, brain health, geriatrics and rehabilitation, and primary care.

Dr. Simone Dahrouge’ s research is in the area of population health and primary care, more specifically focusing on understanding how primary care and health services can be organized to optimize the quality and equity of the care delivered. A current ongoing initiative aims to increase primary care patients’ ability to access community-based primary health care programs by addressing the social barriers that may affect access.

The Bruyère Research Institute is currently looking to hire a Research Assistant II to conduct relevant and practical health sciences research related to the Access to Resources in the Community study.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Research (70%)

  • Connect with primary care patients by telephone to:
  1. Explain the research study and what is involved in participating
  2. Administer a questionnaire and record patient responses
  3. Schedule subsequent appointments related to study participation
  • Assist with developing bilingual promotional material (e.g., recruitment ads, posters, pamphlets/brochures, newsletters, press releases, articles, letters, video scripts and other public relations documents) to raise awareness of (1) the project and (2) community health and social services among primary care providers, practice staff, community organizations, patient navigators, primary care patients, and the general public, as appropriate.
  • Assist with information gathering on community health and social services.
  • Assist with developing presentations and posters using existing research materials.
  • Contribute to the development and adaptation of study material (e.g., data collection tools, guides, data tracking sheets).
  • Support the planning, execution and monitoring of study progress, coordination and deliverables.
  • Assist with data entry, management and analysis.
  • Conduct scientific literature searches and reviews.
  • Maintain and update Research Ethics Board documentation (e.g., annual renewals, amendments, responses to REBs).
  • Assist with manuscript writing for publication.
  • Other duties as reasonably assigned

Administration (30%)

  • Coordinate and organize meetings for researchers, staff, participants and/or external stakeholders (e.g., catering, set up).
  • Support various committees; including scheduling, logistics and AV set-up, agenda preparation, meeting attendance and minute taking.
  • Provide support to other project staff/participants as directed by investigator or other senior staff.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of undergraduate degree in relevant field 
  • Previous experience and/or exposure to health research
  • Exceptional communication skills, including written and verbal (in French and English) 
  • Critical thinking skills and strong ability to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions 
  • Excellent planning and coordination skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of and experience with qualitative and/or quantitative research methods would be considered an asset

Other Key Competencies:

  • Knowledge of reference management software (Reference Manager, EndNote, RefWorks, etc.) would be considered an asset
  • Highly motivated, detail orientated individual with the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to communicate and interact competently and professionally in a variety of settings, both orally and written (in French and English)
  • Self-directed and able to effectively work both independently and as part of a larger team
  • Ability to conduct Internet and literature database searches
  • Skilled at critical thinking to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions 
  • Skilled at planning and setting priorities
  • Ability to work flexible hours based on patient needs
