We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced Research Coordinator for a multi-year CIHR Programmatic Grant in Community Based Primary Health Care. This Programmatic Grant, titled Transforming CBPHC Delivery through Comprehensive Performance Measurement and Reporting, includes four inter-related studies conducted in three provinces: British Columbia, Ontario, and Nova Scotia. Our objectives include:

 
  1. Compare comprehensive measures of PHC performance and healthcare equity between regions;
  2. Examine contextual facilitators and barriers that may explain regional variation; 
  3. Develop and evaluate an approach to national reporting of PHC health performance that is based on priorities and optimal reporting formats identified by PHC stakeholder groups, and; 
  4. Identify innovations of PHC service delivery that are associated with better PHC performance and equity. A fifth objective is to create real-world problem-solving ability in a learning community that includes team researchers, clinicians, decision-makers, students and patients.

Reporting to Co-Principal Investigator Dr. Sharon Johnston, the Research Coordinator is primarily responsible for assisting the research team in areas such as logistics, financial planning and tracking, research support, and human resources. The Research Coordinator will be responsible for both the Ontario site and contributions to the overall management and coordination of the program of research. The Research Coordinator will occasionally travel, locally and nationally, for face-to-face meetings. Research staff such as survey administrators will report directly to the Research coordinator. The Research coordinator will also be responsible for communicating with team members and collaborators based in cities across Canada and internationally.


The Research Coordinator must be able to work highly independently, work with a cross-province team, have a strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks. The Research Coordinator is responsible for the following job duties:

 

Project/Program Coordination

  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the research program with minimal supervision
  • Coordinate logistics for research projects, including plans for data collection and analysis, facilitate meetings, establish project schedules, timelines, and resources
  • Detailed planning, execution and monitoring of programmatic issues including: schedules, progress, coordination, deliverables, milestones and contracts
  • Work with Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigators to set weekly priorities and goals for implementing the research program
  • Work closely and communicate regularly with the research team members who are based at various universities, healthcare agencies, and government departments
  • Exercise professional judgment and initiative in the overall coordination and management of the four inter-related research projects 
  • Plan and organize research team meetings at multiple sites, and maintain minutes and records of decisions 
  • Ensure that all aspects of the research program are running according to schedule, and that the research objectives are met 
  • Coordinate research activities conducted at multiple sites concurrently 
  • Provide regular updates on research activities that are occurring concurrently at multiple sites 
  • Monitor research ethics procedures 
  • Responsible for management at the research office, including the set up and maintenance of files, data tracking and storage procedures, etc. 
  • Prepare budgets and forecasting requirements 
  • Monitor research budgets and implement cost-effective measures to optimize budget utilization 
  • Ensure timely notification to Principal Investigators of issues or problems 

Financial Planning and Tracking

  • Create and justify budgets based on grant contents
  • Track and reconcile expenses against budget and projections of future expenses
  • Establish financial projections
  • Establish budgets and justification
  • Draft service contracts and requisitions

Data Management and Data Analysis

  • Oversee the management, coding and analysis of quantitative data in multiple sites, in consultation with the principal investigators and designated co-investigators 
  • Oversee the management, coding and analysis of qualitative data collected at multiple sites. 
  • Manage central systems to manage and track quantitative and qualitative datasets collected at multiple sites. 
  • Coordinate the hiring of research staff, research assistants and trainees 
  • Provide supervision and leadership to research staff and research assistants 
  • Participate in data collection
  • Audit and monitor data collection to ensure the quality of data collected at multiple sites
 Knowledge Translation and Exchange
  • Develop written reviews of literature needed to support specific projects;
  • Work collaboratively with the research team to develop various reports, academic papers, policy papers, press releases, and presentations
  • Collaborate with our knowledge users and partners in planning, organizing and implement KTE activities

Human Resources 

  • Participate with recruitment of staff and students as required
  • Provide leadership, supervision and support to staff and students
  • Lead the training of research staff and research assistants in quantitative and qualitative data collection
 
 
Provide support to other project staff/participants as directed by researcher or other senior staff.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in health or human sciences. Preference will be given for candidates with a Master’s degree.
  • 5+ years of experience in health research
  • 3 years’ relevant project coordination experience including areas such as budget development and knowledge of granting agency requirements
  • Bilingual (English and French) considered an asset
 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 
  • Experience with project budgeting
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) 
  • Education/training and experience in quantitative research methods, multivariate statistical analysis, and qualitative research methods
  • Experience using quantitative/qualitative research software (SPSS, SAS. Nvivo) an asset
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, manage overlapping project phases and meet deadlines
  • Exceptional communication skills, including written and verbal (in English) 
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, including the ability to adapt to a dynamic project environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Knowledge of performance indicators used in primary care (or other related sectors) preferred
  • Experience managing multi-site quantitative and qualitative studies
  • Experience working with healthcare organizations or agencies
  • Experience providing supervisions and leadership to research staff and research assistants
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise research staff
  • Demonstrated initiative and willingness to work closely with members of a research team to ensure problems are resolved quickly and appropriately
  • Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds, including members of the community, marginalized populations, healthcare providers, and policy makers
  • Ability to be self-directed, and to work both independently and within a team environment
