Function Summary


We are seeking a physician to join our team part-time and provide care to convalescent care residents within Saint-Louis Residence, a long-term care home (housing 22 convalescent care beds) located in an enchanting setting on the banks of the Ottawa River in the east end of the city. The physician will collaborate with a team of healthcare providers including a nurse practitioner, lead registered nurse, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, social services worker, etc. Laboratory services are available twice weekly.

Our convalescent care program provides rehabilitative services in a supportive environment. This program benefits individuals:
 
  • Who are coming out of the hospital because they no longer require acute medical services, but need assistance with their care or with activities of daily living before returning home or to the community
  • Who require therapeutic services to improve their strength, mobility and daily functions
  • From the community recovering from an illness or surgery and requiring additional time to convalesce 

The successful candidate will be appointed by the LTC Home Administrator, be accountable to the Medical Director, and will: 

  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the resident’s medical care, develop a medical plan of treatment for the resident and participate in the interdisciplinary approach to care;
  • Visit the home 1 or 2 times per week;
  • Participate in weekly rounds;
  • Document on the resident’s health record upon admission and upon each subsequent visit, to maintain continuity and ongoing evaluation of all medical services as these relate to the clinical diagnosis;
  • Provide on-call coverage for residents for whom he or she provides medical care (through the LTC Homes on-call group); 
  • Provide exceptional medical care in accordance with Bruyère’s mission, vision and values, Rules and Regulations and Policies;
  • Provide an opportunity for the resident/substitute decision-maker to participate fully in the development and revision of the resident’s medical care plan;
  • Refer residents to the appropriate medical consultants and/or other health practitioners (i.e. physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, speech therapists) when indicated;
  • Liaise with local hospital(s) to facilitate admission(s), transitions, and referrals to specialists;
  • Serve as may be requested on various Home or Bruyère committees;
  • Participate in the teaching of medical and non-medical learners and staff; and
  • Attend the Long-Term Care Medical Advisory Committee meetings. 

Required Qualifications


  • Be a legally qualified medical practitioner licensed to practice medicine in Ontario, with adequate training and experience; 
  • Have the required expertise and experience working with a similar clientele;
  • Bilingualism – French and English
  • Maintain in full force Canadian Medical Protective Association or professional practice liability coverage appropriate to the scope and nature of the intended practice; 
  • Have up-to-date inoculations, screenings and tests as required by Bruyère or other legislation; 
  • Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team;
  • Interact and collaborate respectfully and tactfully with a variety of internal and external stakeholders from diverse backgrounds in a collegial, empathetic manner
  • Have knowledge and and experience using EMR systems
