Carleton University and the Bruyère Research Institute (Bruyère RI) have a proven track record of collaboration between the two institutions, primarily driven by individual faculty leaders, clinical investigators, and/or innovator-led partnerships. The Industry & Partnerships Liaison will formalize, expand and develop relationships between investigators and clinician-innovators from the Bruyère RI, faculty from Carleton University, and partners from industry. The goal of these partnerships is to generate value for both organizations, such as commercializing innovation, increasing funding, establishing new networks, expanding R&D capacity, and growing the overall partnership between Carleton University and the Bruyère RI. Directly reporting to the Director of Innovation and Development at Bruyère Continuing Care (Bruyère), with input from the Director of Industry and Partnership Services at Carleton University, the Industry & Partnerships Liaison will provide support for and have access to resources at both organizations.

About Carleton University: a dynamic, interdisciplinary research intensive institution with a creative international approach to research that has led to many significant discoveries and collaborations in science and engineering, business, public policy and the arts. Founded in 1942, Carleton presently has an enrolment of more than 27,000 undergraduate and more than 4,000 graduate students. In 2017-2018, total research funding at Carleton was $73M.

These two institutions are committed to further developing their innovation capacity by identifying and developing new, reciprocally beneficial partnerships.

 
 

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Promote Bruyère and Carleton University as places where industry, research and innovation thrive through partnerships focused on health, technology and care
  • Foster new and existing relationships between the Bruyère RI, Carleton University and industry partnerships that enable and grow research and innovation
  • Conduct business development activities, including: market research, identification, assessment and pursuit of new opportunities, competitor analysis, and proposal preparation
  • Create alliances and foster strategic partnerships between researchers and clinicians with technology and health-focused companies for regulated clinical trials, research studies, quality improvement and other partnership opportunities
  • Identify and develop new business opportunities for the Bruyère RI and Carleton University
  • Building authentic and enduring relationships with staff, clients, partners, validators and amplifiers across both organizations; rallying them to contribute to projects, proposals and other business development activity
  • Provide input into reports for senior leadership at the Bruyère RI and Carleton University
  • Identify and advise of issues that pose a risk to Bruyère and/or Carleton University and identify appropriate mitigation strategies
  • Participate on relevant committees at both organizations

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration or a scientific technical field (e.g., Life Sciences) with 5+ years’ experience; equivalent experience/volunteerism can substitute and will be considered
  • Demonstrated interest in technology, startups, entrepreneurship, and venture capital
  • Experience with growth hacking techniques and driving lead generation
  • Knowledge of government programs to support innovation and technology development
  • Excellent oral, written communication, networking and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent negotiating and influencing skills necessary to effectively work with a variety of stakeholders
  • Strong attention to detail, risk assessment and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to take a broad, long-range approach to problem-solving and decision-making that involves objective analysis, thinking ahead and planning
  • Advanced computer (i.e., MS Office Suite), analytical, creative problem-solving and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated level of independence in leading and delivering projects on time

  • Demonstrated track record of innovation and partnership development
  • Entrepreneurial/business oriented
  • Forward thinking
  • Product development or equivalent technical or business development experience in life sciences is an asset
  • Connections across the network of Fortune 2000 companies and health technology industry
  • Understanding of processes and practices related to IP and commercialization an asset
  • Bilingualism is an asset, both written and spoken
