We are looking for a senior research associate that has a minimum of five years’ experience in health care research at the PhD level, preferably with a focus on primary care and digital transformation of medicine (i.e. medical education, artificial intelligence, machine learning and/or natural language processing). You will have a keen interest in supporting students, staff and faculty in developing research expertise. You will enjoy leading a team working in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment, have strong quantitative analytical skills, with some qualitative experience preferred, and are excellent at communicating research findings to multiple audiences.

Under the direction of Dr. Clare Liddy, Senior Investigator at the Bruyère Research Institute (BRI) and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine (DFM) at the University of Ottawa, you will independently conduct and coordinate complex projects. Within the DFM, you will have a scientific leadership role in a series of new projects applying unique applications of technology, simulation and games in the delivery of the medical curriculum to undergraduate students and residents. Within the BRI portfolio, you will provide scientific leadership on a diverse portfolio of projects in the domains of family medicine, eConsult, self-management, frailty and dementia. You will lead the creation and submission of large, multi-year funding grant submissions.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Design and implement research programs
  • Lead a team of researchers and students to achieve research objectives
  • Ensure that results are recorded, analyzed and disseminated in a timely fashion and are appropriate for different audiences (i.e. scientists, trainees, lay public)
  • Manage research grants in accordance with funder and ethical requirements
  • Seek new research opportunities and lead or participate in the development of new projects and proposals
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders
  • Coordinate the participation and contribution of team members in all program deliverables
  • Contribute to policy discussions and assist in setting priorities

Required skills and experience

  • PhD in a relevant discipline and a minimum of five years practical experience as an independent researcher
  • Judgement in choosing best protocol/adapting procedures to meet changing needs
  • Experience in healthcare research, preferably family medicine and/or medical education
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, including ability to adapt to a dynamic project environment, manage multiple tasks and work in a virtual environment
  • Comfortable working with new technologies (i.e. artificial intelligence, natural language processing)
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Experience building and maintaining strong relationships and collaborative partnerships
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, manage overlapping project phases, and meet deadlines
