About:

Dr. Martin Chasen is the Medical Director of Palliative and Supportive Care at William Osler Health System in Brampton, Ontario, as well as a Senior Investigator at the Bruyère Research Institute. Dr. Chasen is also a Clinical Professor at McMaster University's Department of Family Medicine and an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto in both the Faculty of Medicine and Department of Community and Family Medicine. He also holds adjunct professorships at McGill University, the University of Ottawa, and Bond University in Australia, in addition to an Honorary Professorship at the University of Cape Town.

He is a trained specialist in both medical oncology and palliative care, and is a leader in palliative medicine delivery and research. He established the Cancer Nutrition and Rehabilitation Program at Montreal's Royal Victoria Hospital, the first of its kind to address patients with advanced cancer and provide them with a multidisciplinary approach to care. In 2009, he initiated a similar Palliative Rehabilitation Program at the Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital as its Medical Director. He also introduced the Palliative and Supportive Care Outpatient Program at the Ottawa General Hospital Cancer Centre.

Since 2015, Dr. Chasen has been working in Brampton, where his team established an 8-pillar model for palliative care, which includes community care, hospice, and survivorship. As Medical Director, his work led the Ottawa Hospital (2014) and Brampton Civic Hospital (2019) to be awarded the internationally recognized accreditation as a Designated Centre for Excellence in Integrated Oncology and Palliative Care from the European Society of Medical Oncology.

For his work, Dr. Chasen has received numerous awards at the local, regional, national, and international levels, including the Simone and Morris Fast Award for Oncology, the Elizabeth Latimer Award, the Eduardo Bruera Award in Palliative Medicine, and the National Institute of Health MERIT award.

Palliative care, cancer survivorship, cancer cachexia, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, digital care, cancer rehabilitation, home care.
