Marking the one-year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic

One year ago today, our reality as health care workers forever changed as we read news of Ottawa’s first confirmed COVID-19 positive case. The novel coronavirus we heard about in the news had landed in our own backyard, and the World Health Organization declared it a pandemic. As a community, as health care professionals and as human beings, we embarked on an arduous journey, one that we are still navigating.
Today, on what the Prime Minister has declared the National Day of Observance of COVID-19, we mourn the loss of more than 22,000 Canadians and the 32 patients, residents and tenants we lost across Bruyère campuses.
Looking back on this past year, so much has been lost and redefined – loved ones, interpersonal relationships, employment, and so much more.
But amidst all of these changes and losses, our organization, patients, residents and community have shown immense resiliency, handwork and selflessness. Much like our foundress, Mother Elisabeth Bruyère, even though times have been incredibly difficult, we haven’t ceased caring for those who need it most.
On this end, several individuals from our Bruyère community, including employees, patients and residents and their loved ones, have generously shared their COVID journeys. Through these stories, we witness hope, generosity, innovation and strength despite the many challenges faced this past year.
