Dr. Clare Liddy Named Family Medicine Researcher of the Year

Congratulations to Dr. Clare Liddy, recipient of the 2019 Family Medicine Researcher of the Year Award from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
The Family Medicine Researcher of the Year Award recognizes a CFPC member who has made original and crucial contributions to research and knowledge building in Family Medicine in Canada. This award honours a researcher who has been a pivotal force in the definition, development, and dissemination of concepts central to the discipline of Family Medicine.
Dr. Liddy is a Clinical Investigator at the C.T. Lamont Primary Health Care Research Centre and an Associate Professor and Chair at the University of Ottawa Department of Family Medicine with a cross-appointment to the School of Epidemiology, Public Health and Preventive Medicine. She practices comprehensive Family Medicine within the Ottawa Hospital Academic Family Health Team at the Riverside Family Medicine Clinic and is a senior investigator with the Bruyère Research Institute. Dr. Liddy has published over 125 peer-reviewed papers with a proven record of accomplishment of moving research into practice and has built a national and international reputation as an expert in chronic disease self-management, advancing primary health care for people living with HIV, and improving access to specialist care.
One of Dr. Liddy’s most significant contributions to primary care research is co-founding the Champlain BASETMeConsultation Service (eConsult) which to date has served over 48,000 patients, enrolled more than 1,400 primary care providers, and offers access to 114 specialty groups in our health region of 1.2 million people. She has acquired $3.4 million of funding for projects pertaining to eConsult, including a $1.1 million grant from CIHR supporting the spread and scale of an eConsult chronic pain service in Manitoba, Ontario, Newfoundland, and Quebec. Her work on eConsult has led to the expansion of the BASE™ model of care to new jurisdictions within Ontario and beyond. eConsult is one of two services offered by the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement’s Connected Medicine Collaborative, which has led to eConsult’s launch in Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Québec, and Manitoba. eConsult is also growing in its home province, with Ontario-wide expansion being managed by the Ontario eConsult Centre of Excellence, of which she is a co-executive director. A collaboration she built with the Ontario Centre for Learning, Research and Innovation at Bruyère enables targeted support for long-term care homes to adopt eConsult for the benefit of some of the most frail Ontarians. Dr. Liddy has hosted three Annual Policy Forums connecting researchers, policymakers, clinicians, and patients from across Canada in order to tackle spread and scale issues to ensure further expansion of eConsult across the country.
