Making a patient's wish to attend a metal show come true

When a patient at Bruyère Health shared a dream of seeing a heavy metal show, but was medically unable to attend one, Clinical Chaplain Roshene Lawson had a simple response: challenge accepted.
At Bruyère Health, we believe exceptional care means caring for the whole person. Alongside expert medical care, our teams strive to support patients' emotional, spiritual, and personal well-being. Our Spiritual Care team plays an important role in that work, connecting with patients and residents to discuss everything from faith and meaning to grief, loss, living, and end-of-life.
During one of these conversations, patient Tim Berry shared that he regretted never having attended a heavy metal concert. Because he was too medically fragile to leave the hospital, the team decided to bring the concert to him.
Roshene and the 5 North team worked together to make Tim's wish a reality. Partnering with The Dominion Tavern, they arranged for local metal band The Scepter to perform in a fifth-floor boardroom and transformed into a concert venue. Complete with colourful lights, a fan machine, and printed tickets, the event gave Tim and fellow patients the chance to experience the excitement and energy of a live show.
Roshene later told CBC's All in a Day that it was one of the most meaningful experiences of her career as a chaplain.
