Study reveals the changing health profiles of new long-term care residents in Ontario

A study led by Amy Hsu, PhD, reveals the increasing complexity of residents in long-term care across Ontario. She and her team examined 16 years of ICES data and analysed it using a custom computer algorithm.
Key Findings:
- The number of people who are 85+ years old increased from 45% to 54%
- 1-in-4 long-term care residents will have 7+ chronic conditions upon entry
- 1-in-2 residents now have dementia upon admission to long-term care
- 66% of long-term care residents now have 9+ prescription medications
- New residents are now more likely to have physical and cognitive impairments upon admission
These findings were published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
