Telfer and Bruyère Health collaborate to drive meaningful improvement in health care

07/24/2025

At Bruyère Health, we believe that investments in quality are investments in the quality of life of those we care for and their loved ones. This is why we’ve entered a formal collaboration with Telfer Executive Programs at the University of Ottawa to deliver the refreshed and redesigned Leading Quality Improvement in Healthcare Certificate program.

This is a refreshed curriculum of a program that has run for 14 years with participants from across Ontario from Ottawa to the GTHA and Quebec. This 6-day program, delivered over 8 months, offers a comprehensive framework, supporting toolkits, and practical strategies for continuous innovation. Participants will also explore their own leadership styles, learning how to leverage their strengths to lead successful change.

This program entrenches a deep understanding of how foster a strong quality improvement culture, develop influence, and lead change. This leadership skill building ensures that participants leave the program with the skills and confidence to become QI champions within their organizations.

It is also hands-on, as participants will develop and deliver a quality improvement project in their own health care setting. At Bruyère Health, we’ve seen the benefits for our leaders extend to our teams, our patients and our system.

The Bruyère Health experience

Two physicians led projects through the 2024-25 program that are already making a difference in the way we deliver care at Bruyère Health and in the community.

Dr. Aaron Livingstone improved discharge planning across Bruyère Health’s Low Intensity Rehabilitation (LIR) Program. His project tackled inconsistencies in discharge processes and documentation. Through co-design, the initiative increased the number of patients with a set discharge date by day 35 from 50% to 70%. It also contributed to a 15% increase in community discharges on one unit.

Dr. Jessica Roy led a project that successfully increased palliative home visits at the Bruyère Family Health Team by 60% in just three months. Through physician and nurse practitioner engagement and co-design, she addressed barriers in hopes of unlocking a model for more accessible end-of-life care at home. She now aims to collaborate with academic family health teams at The Ottawa Hospital and Montfort to scale this model regionally.

Beyond Bruyère Health

Individuals who have taken this program are driving improvement in the areas of:

  • Improved discharge experience and overall hospital stay experience
  • Reduced hospital length of stay through targeted interventions
  • Regional access to surgical care and efficiency in the use of existing surgical resources, reducing wait times
  • Improved access to care for patients in their home
  • Improved access to clinical procedures for members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community
