Bruyère Health Research Institute designated as PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre and inaugural member of WHO Health Inequality Monitoring Network

08/28/2025

We are proud to announce that Bruyère Health Research Institute has been redesignated as a Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) / World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Knowledge Translation and Health Technology Assessment for Health Equity. This designation reflects Bruyère Health Research Institute, WHO, and PAHO’s continued commitment to advancing global public health through research, knowledge translation, and evidence-based policies, programs, and practice guidelines.

“Over the past 28 years we have been designated as a collaborating center, we have developed a global network of researchers, practitioners, and academics who focus on evidence around the determinants of health access and outcomes for vulnerable populations, including creating the first global tool kit for health technology assessment,” said Janet Hatcher-Robers, co-director of the collaborating centre with Dr. Peter Tugwell at Bruyère Health Research Institute. “I’m proud to be working alongside so many dedicated researchers who are advancing global health equity.”

In addition to this redesignation, Bruyère Health Research Institute has also been selected as a participant in the WHO Health Inequality Monitoring Network (WHO HIM). This newly established global network brings together leading institutions from around the world to strengthen capacity, generate evidence, and advance methods for health inequality monitoring and foster inclusive health systems and universal health coverage.

“We are thrilled to be one of twelve institutions joining the Health Inequality Monitoring Network,” said Dr. Jerry Maniate, Institutional Lead for the WHO HIM Network at Bruyère Health Research Institute. “We are looking forward to our team, from early career researchers to established investigators, taking part in the Train the Trainer program and creating new working groups to support the goals of the WHO HIM Network to build capacity for health inequality monitoring across Member States.”

As a PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre and a participant in the WHO-managed HIM Network, these groups will contribute to:

  • Identify research gap priorities and support systematic reviews related to the Decade of Healthy Ageing, Social Determinants of Health in the Americas, and gender inequalities.
  • Design training and toolboxes that support WHO’s activities in disease intervention, equitable access to health services, primary care, and more.
  • Exchange best practices and lessons learned regarding health inequality monitoring and provide expertise for integrating data disaggregation in health information systems.
  • Identify, develop, and support training programs, tools, and resources that support WHO’s members.

We are honoured to deepen our collaboration with WHO and join this vital global effort to ensure no one is left behind.
