About:

Dr. Peter Tugwell is a Senior Investigator at Bruyère Research Institute, where he is co-director of the Ottawa Centre for Health Equity, and co-director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Knowledge Translation & Health Technology Assessment in Equity. He is Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology & Community Medicine at the University of Ottawa and is a practicing rheumatologist at the Ottawa Hospital.

Brought up in England, he emigrated to Hamilton in Canada in 1975 after 3 years in Nigeria. While at McMaster University 1975-91, he was Chair of the McMaster University Dept of Epidemiology and Biostatistics 1979-89 and University Division Head of Rheumatology 1980-85. He came to Ottawa in 1991 as Chair of the University of Ottawa and Ottawa Hospital Dept of Medicine (1991-2001). He has held a Canada Research Chair 2002-2022.

Since arriving in Ottawa, he has built a research program in evidence-based medicine in rheumatology and global health, and more recently has built a multidisciplinary team focused on equity around his Canada Research Chair in Health Equity.

Dr. Tugwell co-chaired the 1993 inaugural meeting and has held a number of positions in the global Cochrane Collaboration. He is currently Founding Co-convenor of the Cochrane Health Equity Thematic Group and is the founding Co-Chair of the Campbell Collaboration International Development Group. Between 2001-2022 he was the Co-Editor-In Chief for the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology during which time the Impact Factor rose from 2 to 7.

In 2008 he was named as CIHR Researcher of the Year in Health Services Research. In 2013 he was appointed Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions as an epidemiologist focused on reducing global disparities in health care. Dr. Tugwell's publication record includes over 1000 journal articles, monographs, and book chapters.
