Reducing Gender Inequalities in Ageing

08/07/2018

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research have awarded Vivian Welch, PhD, new funding to evaluate gender inequalities in health outcomes for older adults receiving home-based care or long-term care.

To accomplish this objective, Vivian and her team will be mapping all available research on residential health and social care for older adults. The goal behind this work is to summarize the available research and to identify areas that need to be studied in the future. This summary will be constructed using a Campbell Collaboration evidence gap map, which was designed to conveniently organize research into a “map” for analysis. The information summarized in this map will be examined through a gender lens.

The project includes international collaborators from Cochrane Global Ageing, the World Health Organization and University of Ottawa leaders in ageing and health equity research, including Heidi Sveistrup, Peter Tanuseputro, and Jeff Jutai. Three postdoctoral fellows are also involved in the work: Jennifer Petkovic, Lisa Sheehy, and Amy Hsu.

The hope is that the findings from this review will lead to the creation of new priorities for future research to reduce gender inequalities in ageing.
