The art of enhancing lives and transforming care

7/4/2017

It is springtime in The Rockies and all across the land
The earth gives birth to tiny plants that grow with natures’ hand
Trees unfurl their brand new leaves then point toward the sky
And some say when it rains in April, it’s because the Angel’s cry.

Written by Saint-Vincent Hospital patient Janet L. Wainwright, the full version of this poem tied together all of the artistic components of a special project proudly carried out by Bruyère Continuing Care (Bruyère) and The School of Dance.

The exciting project, titled Canadian Stories—A Celebration of Canada’s 150th Birthday, was implemented as part of the Ontario Seniors Community Grant Program to help seniors across Ontario by encouraging greater social involvement, volunteering and community engagement.

“The School is celebrating Canada’s birthday in many different ways,” said Merrilee Hodgins, artistic director at The School of Dance. “I wanted to create a truly meaningful celebration for Canada’s 150th, by bringing together seniors and students with dancers and musicians to tell our stories through dance, art and film.”

The project was comprised of four components:
  1. Dance workshops
  2. Video testimonials
  3. Visual arts (see photo)
  4. Dance performances by The School of Dance professional and student dancers

“Janet was absolutely thrilled to have read her poem during the dance performances and to have the opportunity to see art through dance, hear stories of fellow patients and participate in the development of the Canadian Stories art project.” said Kim Durst-Mackenzie, therapeutic recreation and volunteer coordinator at Bruyère.

Thanks to the contributions of our dear friends at The School of Dance, this intergenerational program touched the hearts of many at Bruyère. Thank you for supporting our vision of Enhancing Lives. Transforming Care.
