Musically omnivorous professor leads concert at Saint-Vincent Hospital

03/26/2024

Carleton University music professor, Juno Award-winner, composer, and percussionist Jesse Stewart is known for making music using everything from mixing bowls to canoe paddles.

On March 27, he brings his multi-faceted rhythms to Saint-Vincent Hospital. He's been a regular visitor there since January and will be leading a concert with a group of musicians.

Through academic writing, public speaking, composition and performance, Jesse has been exploring the potential for music in the world all around us for years.

In 2015, he received a grant from the City of Ottawa to create a sound sculpture called The Listening Tree, a 4.5-metre (15-foot) stainless steel sound sculpture in St. Luke's Park in downtown Ottawa. The sculpture, shaped like a tree to complement the park surroundings, is an instrument itself that creates music by channeling the wind to create a series of shifting tones.

We Are All Musicians
Recently, Jesse founded the We Are All Musicians (WAAM) project. The goal of WAAM is to provide chances for people to make music, no matter what their age, socio-economic circumstance, musical training, or ability.

With WAAM, Jesse has hosted hundreds of inclusive workshops throughout North America. He has collaborated with many diverse communities including Indigenous youth, deaf children, people with physical disabilities, people with Alzheimer's disease and children and adults from low-income backgrounds. A documentary about the WAAM project can be seen here.

On March 30, Jesse will be screening the movie Chance Encounters, a show combining music and storytelling and music played on a variety of unusual instruments. It's an examination of how fleeting encounters with strangers can create a lasting impact.

The screening takes place at 3:30 p.m. Saturday March 30 at the Mayfair Theatre followed by a question-and-answer session with the filmmakers.
