BRI investigator Dr. Kevin Pottie wants to build Canada’s first homeless health guidelines

24/11/2017

Bruyère Research Institute (BRI) investigator Dr. Kevin Pottie is leading a project to develop guidelines on homeless health in Canada. Dr. Pottie hosted a first-of-its kind working group to accomplish this goal. The group met in the basement of a hospital in Montreal, where individuals with lived experience had a chance to shed light on the challenges that face homeless people in Canada.

This working group was the second phase of a larger research project. Dr. Pottie and his team began their work with a survey completed by over 160 collaborators from across Canada, including persons with lived experience. This survey identified some key issues facing homeless or near-homeless in Canada, including finding a house, income support, care with mental illness and addictions, as well as care coordination interventions. The purpose of the working group in Montreal was to identify which of these issues should be prioritized for solutions.

The meeting itself was a success. After two days of rigorous discussion among various stakeholders, Dr. Pottie and his team are ready to move on to the next phase of their project.

This project has received $200,000 in funding from the Inner City Health Associates, a group that serves homeless or near-homeless in Toronto.
