Smoke-Free Regulations for Better Health at Ottawa Hospitals

12/12/2017

Starting January 1, 2018, the outdoor grounds of all Ontario hospitals will be 100% smoke-free under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act (SFOA). Ottawa Public Health and Ottawa’s local hospitals are working to ensure that patients, visitors and staff are not exposed to smoking and second-hand smoke and are aware of the new smoke-free regulations. Designated smoking areas will be removed, making all Ontario hospital grounds entirely smoke-free.

The Ottawa Smoke-Free Hospital Network is working to raise awareness among the public, hospital staff and visitors to Ottawa’s 10 hospital campuses that hospital property will be 100% smoke-free as of January 1, 2018. In response, local hospitals are expanding available quit-smoking services for patients, visitors and staff including nicotine replacement therapy and smoking cessation counselling. There will also be increased enforcement measures on hospital properties that may result with issuance of Provincial Offences Notice tickets that carry fines of $305.

Hospital campuses affected by the regulations include: Elisabeth Bruyère Hospital; Hôpital Montfort; The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario; The Ottawa Hospital – Civic, General and Riverside campuses; Queensway Carleton Hospital; Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre; St-Vincent Hospital; and University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
