Function Summary

 

Reporting to the Manager, Decision Support, you will be accountable for the efficient completion and data accuracy of the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI)-Minimum Data Set (MDS), a standardized clinical assessment. Data from the RAI-MDS is submitted quarterly to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). Data is made available throughout Canada for planning and monitoring care, understanding populations, improving quality and allocating resources. At Bruyère Continuing Care, data is utilized for analysis of safety and quality of cadre as well as to support program level decision-making.

You will work in close collaboration with the entire department of Decision Support, Management, Medical Chiefs and interdisciplinary teams of Long Term Care (LTC), Complex Continuing Care (CCC) and Palliative Care (PCU) as well as some corporate services, namely Health Records, Admissions and Patient Registration, Information Systems and the Quality and Risk Management.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:
 

  • Develop processes to ensure data collected from clinical documentation is completed according to CIHI guidelines and accurately reflects the care needs of patients;
  • Work in a collaborative manner with clinical staff including Nurses, Allied Health professionals, Physicians, Clinical Managers and Directors of Care to address areas where clinical documentation or coding can be improved;
  • Analyze collected data from Bruyère’s electronic patient record, MEDITECH, using software such as Excel and Crystal Reports to answers specific clinical or administrative queries;
  • Conduct analyses to ensure integrity of clinical data captured by the system;
  • Develop training materials and oversee training of clinical, medical and management staff at initial system implementation and for any significant subsequent changes in system functionality;
  • Provide timely and accurate support and guidance to clinical staff, managers and designated MDS technicians in their daily use of the system;
  • Work closely with Information Systems to plan, test and implement system changes and upgrades from vendor or CIHI;
  • Collaborate with the Management team to disseminate collected data to the clinical teams to aid in the development and ongoing support of quality improvement initiatives designed to improve both safety and quality of care for improved patient/resident outcomes;
  • Develop and write reports intended for various stakeholders using clinical data and program performance data.

Required Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Regulated Health Profession or equivalent combination of experience, education and training;
  • Master's degree in Health, Public or Business Administration or other relevant (preferred);
  • Fluent in English, spoken and written. Spoken fluency in French would be an asset;
  • Recent clinical experience in Complex Continuing Care, Palliative Care, Long Term Care, or hospital setting or current experience as an Analyst in Healthcare is preferred;
  • Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel and Outlook. Expertise in the use of MEDITECH, Point Click Care, or Crystal Reports would be an asset;
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology;
  • Previous experience analyzing data sets and preparing reports which include both text and graphs to illustrate trends and data anomalies.

 

 

Key Competencies

 

  • Previous experience with the collection and interpretation of health administration data systems such as the Continuing Care Reporting System, the National Rehabilitation Reporting System, the Discharge Abstract Database which are submitted to the Canadian Institute for Health Information;
  • Previous data analysis experience in a healthcare environment;
  • Previous clinical experience in a long-term care, continuing care or palliative care setting;
  • Demonstrated analytical skills, able to interpret clinical utilization data to the management team as well as clinicians;
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, teaching and problem-solving abilities;
  • Demonstrated strength with oral, written, presentation, and communication skills;
  • Ability to work in a collegial, consultative and collaborative fashion with interdisciplinary team members;
  • Demonstrated ability to show conscientious attention to detail and meet established timelines for work completion;
  • Previous experience in data analysis and report writing;
  • Demonstrated past work experience being able to function in a self-directed manner;
  • Committed to continuous quality improvement;
  • Past experience teaching others using various teaching modalities;
  • Ability to work within an ever changing work environment and be able to search out informal learning opportunities to bridge identified knowledge gaps;
  • Past experience teaching others using various teaching modalities including virtual teaching.
