The Bruyère Research Institute (Bruyère RI) supports investigators who contribute to a better, more responsive health care system that delivers the best care to patients, residents, and families. Bruyère RI focuses predominantly on research to improve the care and quality of life of aging Canadians and vulnerable populations through evidence-based solutions. Bruyère and its Research Institute are fully affiliated with the University of Ottawa, and have other regional academic, government, NGO, and industry partners engaged in collaborative research and innovation initiatives. Our research not only benefits our patients but affects change across our health care system by leading best practice and exploring new and improved solutions to building system capacity and supporting care.

Function summary

This position has multiple responsibilities as Vice-President (VP), Research and Academic Affairs of Bruyère and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of the Bruyère Research Institute (Bruyère RI).
As VP, Research and Academic Affairs, Bruyère, the incumbent is a member of the Senior Strategy Team and reports to the President and CEO of Bruyère. The incumbent is responsible for Research and Academic Affairs and works closely with other senior leaders, collaborating across the organization. The incumbent plays a critical role as an Ambassador for Bruyère’s research and academic endeavors in relation to the University of Ottawa and other academic partners, partner hospitals, government and the broader regional, provincial, national, and international landscape. Recruiting, developing, mentoring, and retaining key scientists focused on a team-based, multidisciplinary and knowledge mobilization approach will continue to be a key priority of the role.
As the CEO and CSO, Bruyère RI, the incumbent assumes the overall responsibility for all activities of Bruyère RI and reports to the Bruyère RI Board of Directors. The incumbent also holds an academic appointment in a Department of the University of Ottawa that fits with the education, experience and discipline of the incumbent. The incumbent provides expertise and support to the organization’s clinical programs in the identification, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based practice and quality improvement. This includes provision of scientific evidence, knowledge mobilization to inform quality improvement, policy and practice, as well as building the profile and value of research as an important and integrated part of the mission of the organization.
This is a key leadership position, accountable for overseeing the integration of research and education / training excellence in research with a priority of advancing care at Bruyère, supporting the strategic plans of both Bruyère and Bruyère RI, in collaboration with the University of Ottawa.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD degree in Applied Health Research and / or MD degree with Graduate Level training in related research (eg. Epidemiology);
  • Rank of Full Professor or equivalent with a recognized research institution;
  • Minimum 10 years of executive/senior management experience including as an internationally/nationally recognized health researcher, in a leadership, influencing, and training role, in one or more of the University, school / hospital sectors, or in a charitable or not-for-profit organization;
  • Experience in building a research enterprise through positive relationships with strategic partners, funding agencies, government, and the research community;
  • Experience with strategic planning and partnership development and with appearing before Boards, Councils and Committees to present and defend complex issues;
  • Experience in planning and implementing corporate strategic goals and objectives throughout all levels of the organization;
  • Strong experience and demonstrated competency in commercializing and bringing to scale/implementing health innovations into clinical practice;
  • Experience and demonstrated performance as an independent investigator and researcher with ability to secure external funding awards for research projects / people / infrastructure;
  • Experience in applied research program development;
  • Leadership experience with research committees or advocacy tables at a provincial and/or national level.

Key Competencies

  • Research Excellence – The incumbent will be a leading national or international researcher. They will have a strong peer-reviewed publication record and demonstrated success at obtaining tri-council funding. The incumbent will have a track record of excellent mentorship and a strong record of supervising students. The incumbent will be able to demonstrate a strong vision for developing both research and innovation programs that are closely aligned with Bruyère’s strategic plan.
  • Strategic Partnerships, Collaboration and Relationships – The incumbent will have a demonstrated history of commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, and effective internal and external relationships with strategic partners, funding agencies, government, industry and the research community. They will effectively work with aligned partner organizations, including academic, technical, leadership, clinical and public sector audiences, and have a proven ability to work with government, health care systems and community agencies in research and commercialization efforts. As part of their role, the candidate will have experience with and understanding of the private sector.
  • Strategic Planning – The incumbent will have a demonstrated ability to think strategically and to ensure strategic directions are translated to the tactical and operational levels. They will have demonstrated the ability to contribute to the planning and implementation of Bruyère corporate strategic goals and objectives, aligning research goals to same.
  • Communication, Critical and Complex thinking – The incumbent will have a superior ability to conceptualize, present and defend complex issues and opportunities to senior leaders and stakeholders. This includes strong communication skills, orally and in writing, ideally in both official languages, including public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Leadership and Advocacy – The incumbent will have exemplary and inspiring leadership, interpersonal, and advocacy skills with the ability to influence people at all levels of the organization and external stakeholders. They will have a demonstrated ability to lead a team to support the creation of structures, processes, and systems that will advance the creation and integration of research, teaching, commercialization and clinical activities at Bruyère. They will have a superior ability to advocate for the importance and value of hospital-based research within Bruyère, the Ottawa academic community and the community at large. They will have a strong ability to emulate organizational values in dealing with complex situations involving competing interests.
  • Emerging Trends and Issues – The incumbent will have a broad understanding of changing priorities, trends, legislative requirements and/or other internal and external emerging issues and their potential impacts on strategic goals, priorities, and activities across the organization.
  • Commercialization – The incumbent will have a proven record of commercialization of research.
  • Adaptability and Organizational Skills – The incumbent will have highly developed organizational skills to oversee or provide advice on the initiation, development, and successful implementation of programs, within changing priorities, across multiple program areas, and in stressful environments.
  • Fundraising – The incumbent will be able to support the Bruyère Foundation efforts to fundraise for Bruyere and the Research Institute.
  • Change Management – The incumbent will have knowledge and understanding of change management, combined with skill and perseverance in managing and implementing change in large complex partner organizations.
  • Technological Skills – The incumbent will have knowledge and ability to comfortably use Microsoft Office and research computer applications.
