Function Summary

As neglected tropical disease (NTD) programs move towards 2030, understanding the context in which programs work and how this impacts program effectiveness and equity are increasingly important themes that need to be addressed to achieve control and elimination goals. Applied research methods, both to explore context and to answer current programmatic challenges, cut across the social and behavioral sciences, ranging from anthropology to applied epidemiology to health economics, among many others. Often grouped together under the theme of “social science” research, this body of work is frequently highlighted as crucial to the success of NTD efforts yet has historically not always received the same levels of interest and funding as other priority areas.

Recognizing the need to harness social scientists more effectively to support NTD programs, thought leaders in the field decided to form a community of practice, called iCHORDS (Improving Community Health Outcomes through Research, Dialogue and Systems Strengthening). iCHORDS was launched in 2019 and has now over 440 members from more than 55 different countries.
