The Bruyère Centre for Learning Research and Innovation (CLRI) in Long-Term Care is committed to enhancing the quality of care in the long-term care sector through facilitating collaborations between researchers, educators, long-term care home personnel and other practitioners in the development, adoption and continuous improvement of evidence based best practices that increase the efficiency, effectiveness, sustainability and quality of care. The CLRI’s work includes supporting long-term care homes in accessing education, best evidence and other learning resources. The Bruyère CLRI is a major initiative of the Bruyère Research Institute (BRI) and is one of three CLRI’s in the province of Ontario, the other two CLRI’s being at Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging and Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care.

The Knowledge and Education Specialist is responsible for facilitating the two-way or multi-way exchange and adoption of information, knowledge and practice including relevant evidence, knowledge and best practices, throughout Ontario long-term care homes. This responsibility includes working in collaboration with BRI, Bruyère and CLRI teams and key external stakeholders to develop and implement knowledge initiatives that are creative, practical and relevant to the sector. By drawing on existing knowledge, research and information, the Knowledge and Education Specialist will identify and/or build tools that can change practice and improve capacity within the sector. The incumbent will have demonstrated success in vetting, summarizing and disseminating relevant evidence, knowledge and best practices in health care to clinical (existing care providers and entry-to-practice), government and public stakeholder groups and the general public.


Main duties and responsibilities:

Education and knowledge content development, delivery and evaluation (35%):

  • In collaboration with relevant team members and partners, design, create, test, evaluate (using mixed methods of evaluation) and revise as needed bilingual educational or communications content for various LTC audiences, taking into account best practices and delivery mechanisms suitable for effective learning for each audience;
  • Clearly communicate ideas and learning solutions to team members to ensure that ideas are accurately reflected in the final product;
  • Stay abreast of current trends in education and learning delivery mechanisms including eLearning concepts and technologies;
  • Deliver educational content, programs and resources to relevant audiences;
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Facilitate ongoing knowledge development, use and evaluation in LTC (35%):

  • Establish and maintain networks of stakeholders and partners in the long-term care sector;
  • Facilitate knowledge exchange and sharing among and between researchers, educators, health care providers, students, government and community groups with the goal of identifying needs, challenges, areas for growth and solving problems, and promoting evidence-informed decision making into policy and practice decisions in long-term care;
  • Integrate evidence-based research and best practices to lead the development and implementation of knowledge mobilization initiatives, primarily in the area of education (staff and entry-to-practice) and training for a diverse group of long-term care staff (different levels of management, registered and unregulated staff) and care partners, with the goal of supporting their personal and professional development, continuously improving individual and team performance, and contributing to their organization’s success in achieving its strategic plan.
  • Conduct research into areas related to education and training in LTC and their evaluation;
  • Lead the development and use of knowledge mobilization initiatives on assigned projects;
  • Conduct ongoing monitoring and evaluation of CLRI initiatives to identify success or necessary changes;
  • Routinely present new research, evidence and practices to a variety of lay and clinical audiences, at a variety of different venues (conferences, symposiums, workshops, webinars, etc.);
  • Regularly identify, interpret and summarize in plain language the key learnings from research, project results and decision-maker priorities to inform various long-term care sector stakeholders;
  • Navigate or guide stakeholders through sources for research;
  • Work with team members and consultants on assigned CLRI projects related to education and/or knowledge mobilization.

Planning in LTC (15%)

  • Contribute to CLRI short and long-term planning as appropriate;
  • Represent the CLRI on various regional and provincial networks and committees;
  • Deliver project updates at the Bruyère LTC Education Group meetings.

Administration and Communication (15%)

  • Provide high-level administrative support to planning and delivery of education and knowledge translation projects;
  • Recommend, implement, and administer methods and procedures to enhance operations and administration of CLRI projects;
  • Work with communications team members to promote and communicate education and knowledge translation activities including participating in media activities;
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field with minimum 3-5 years’ of related experience (in long term care an asset);
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing innovative education and knowledge exchange strategies, including an understanding of the context, processes, and key influencers of both the producers and users of knowledge;
  • Demonstrated experience building relationships with partners at local, regional and provincial levels;
  • Demonstrated skills in group facilitation and adult education, with expertise in needs assessment, synthesizing and adapting information for use in different contexts;
  • A track record of success working in health care and academia in a highly complex-specific environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact competently and professionally in a variety of settings, both orally and in writing, in French and English; 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment;
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, manage overlapping project phases and meet tight deadlines;
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills with ability to effectively manage multiple projects;
  • Demonstrative effectiveness in working in a virtual environment (teleconferences, e-meetings and video conferencing);
  • Critical reflection, abilities and practices;
  • Excellent work ethic demonstrated by a strong desire to learn, a commitment to quality, and a take-charge attitude;
  • Ability to maintain a positive, flexible and responsive attitude, professional image and team-oriented style;
  • Strong computer skills and understanding of Office applications.
