Function summaryReporting to the Director, Facilities Management, the Wheelchair Technician is responsible for the diagnosis, troubleshooting, inventory, repair and maintenance of all Bruyère Continuing Care's manual and power wheelchairs, including commodes and walkers, and scooters. Typical technical work includes adjustment and modification of wheelchairs and specialized seating systems for patients. Other assistive devices encountered utilize mechanical, electrical and electronic technologies. The incumbent is also responsible for the fabrication or modification of devices that are safe, cost effective and of good appearance while satisfying the clinical requirements. The prime responsibility of the Wheelchair Technician is provision of technical support to clinical staff. He/she also provides services to the Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC) clinic and Chronic Assisted Ventilator Program (CAVC). He/She is committed to patient and resident safety, on-going learning and continuous quality improvement. Required qualifications- Secondary school diploma (Grade 12) coupled with relevant experience in the field of small repairs, mechanics, electronics
- Experience:
- Six (6) months experience of wheelchair repair or - One (1) year relevant experience with a related technologist diploma or - Two (2) years related experience with mechanical/electrical/electronical abilities
- Knowledge of proper and safe use of power tools
- Extensive knowledge of seating and mobility equipment currently on the market and ability to provide configurations for seating and mobility requirements.
- Ability to perform activities requiring considerable standing, bending, reaching, pushing, transferring of patients and lifting of equipment
- Basic computer skills
- Fluent in French and English
Preferred Qualifications - Experience repairing mechanical equipment - experience repairing mobility equipment (particularly manual and power wheelchairs) and electronics preferred.
- Previous experience with wheelchairs, scooters or other similar medical equipment
- Technical training as machinist, automotive service technician, motive power technician, aircraft maintenance technician or in a related field with mechanical, electrical or electronic technology background
