The Bruyère Research Institute partners with Bruyère Continuing Care, the University of Ottawa and other stakeholders to conduct relevant and practical health sciences research related to medical education and improving the quality of life for the aging population and people requiring continuing care.


Function Summary

Nurse practitioners (NPs) play a critical role in providing care within long-term care (LTC) homes. NPs are advanced nurses with master’s degrees. They can assess, diagnose, prescribe and treat residents, and work collaboratively with frontline staff, managers and physicians to provide care. Investigators (Amy Hsu, PhD, Carrie Heer, NP-PHC MN) at the Bruyère Research Institute are leading several projects on the contribution of this workforce to care quality and outcomes within LTC. For example, one project aims to develop a better understanding of the role of NPs in supporting the repatriation process to LTC after an emergency department transfer or hospital admission. Another project co-led by the Principal Investigators focuses on enablers and barriers to the recruitment and retention of NPs in the LTC sector.

The Research Assistant II will be responsible for assisting in overseeing day-to-day operations of academic projects (i.e., education, research, etc.) under the supervision of the Principal Investigators. This includes supporting Research Ethics Board submissions and adherence, participant recruitment, data management (including collection, entry, analysis, and dissemination), and manuscript and report writing. This role may also include the development and oversite of project budgets. The Research Assistant II will assist in program development and other duties as required.


Main duties and responsibilities

  • Coordinating logistics for academic projects (i.e., education, research, etc.), including (but not limited to) planning for data collection and analysis, organizing and facilitating meetings, establishing project schedules, timelines, and resources
  • Assisting with detailed planning, execution and monitoring of programmatic issues including (but not limited to) schedules, progress, coordination, deliverables, milestones, and contracts
  • Assisting with the creation and justification of budgets based on grant and project objectives
  • Tracking and reconciling expenses against budget and projections of future expenses
  • Drafting service contracts and requisitions
  • Assisting with recruitment of staff and students, as required
  • Additional duties may be added as projects progress


Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in health sciences or related field
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a master’s degree in health sciences, epidemiology, health services research, public health or related field
  • Experience in a health profession, medical education and/or heath sector is an asset
  • Experience and strong interest in nursing research is an asset
  • Prior experience working in a research environment
  • Ability to conduct Internet and literature database searches
  • The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate their ability to create professional research publications
  • Experience using quantitative and qualitative research software (Stata, SAS, Nvivo)
  • Fluent in French and English, an asset
