Function Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Emergency Management and Telecommunications, this role is responsible for operating the hospital’s telephone console, as well as providing information/directions at the hospital’s entrance.

Tasks include:
  • Receive and direct all incoming calls made to the hospital’s main number.
  • Make calls on behalf of patients, provide directions and answer questions.
  • Make announcements for alarms.
  • Sort, send and receive mail, as well as a wide variety of other related tasks, such as, e.g., sign-out keys for meeting rooms, and provide volunteers with volunteer kits for Para-Transpo trips.
  • Provide courteous, friendly and helpful service to all their clientele, both those on the phone (internal or external), or to people asking for help at the Information desk. Their answers, conversations and responses set a tone for their callers or clients and create an impression of who we are and what we are like as an organization.

The operator’s workday: evening and night shifts, 7 days a week, every day of the year.

Required Qualifications

  • Secondary school diploma.
  • Six (6) months experience receiving calls on a switchboard, or dealing with the public, as a receptionist
  • Fluent in French and English (Candidates who do not meet this language requirement are eligible to apply for this position and may be considered if there are no other suitable applicants who meet this requirement.)

  • Basic Medical terminology knowledge.
  • Must have good people skills and good judgment.
  • Able to handle many activities at the same time.
  • Calm in case of emergencies.
  • Tact, patience, diplomacy and discretion.
