The Bruyère Research Institute partners with Bruyère, the University of Ottawa and other stakeholders to conduct relevant and practical health sciences research related to medical education and improving the quality of life for the aging population and people requiring continuing care.


Function Summary

We are currently seeking a Research Associate to assist two investigators at the Bruyère Research Institute (BRI). Dr. Clare Liddy is a senior investigator with the Bruyère Research Institute, and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Sathya Karunananthan is an Investigator at BRI and an assistant professor at the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa.

Our research teams are dedicated to improving access to specialty care using digital health technologies such as electronic consultations. We prioritize research activities in areas such as Frailty, Dementia, Chronic Pain, and Artificial Intelligence, with a particular emphasis on addressing health equity among underserved populations.

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Research Associate to join our team to actively contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of primary health care. This role will focus on utilizing health administrative datasets housed at the Institute of Clinical Evaluative Sciences. The Research Associate will play a key role in conducting research projects, including study design, data analysis and interpretation, as well as contributing to grant development and research ethics applications.


Main duties and responsibilities

  • Collaborating with the principal investigators to develop research protocols and ethics applications for studies utilizing data from the Institute of Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) and other data sources
  • Completing forms and paperwork related to study design, data acquisition, management, and ethics compliance specific to ICES
  • Advising the research team on best practices for working with ICES datasets, including data handling procedures and analysis techniques
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and ethical standards for ICES studies
  • Maintaining up-to-date administrative records of institutional research ethics and ICES privacy documentation for each ongoing and completed projects
  • Undertaking and contributing to health research projects by applying appropriate quantitative and/or qualitative research methods such as descriptive analysis, statistical models, literature reviews, interviews, and surveys
  • Interpreting data results with clarity, transforming them into key messages and visualizations for a range of audiences
  • Planning and drafting grant proposals, encompassing literature reviews, administrative tasks, collaborator meetings, updates, budget planning, or requests for specific feedback
  • Communicating effectively with team members, clinical collaborators, colleagues, research advisors, patient partners, and external stakeholders
  • Coordinating logistical support for research-related tasks including scheduling, hosting, attending regular meetings, and maintaining ongoing administrative and collaborator correspondence
  • Developing and maintaining systems to track progress of research projects and stakeholder outreach
  • Additional duties may be added as projects progress


Required Qualifications and Competencies

  • Master’s degree or PhD with minimum three (3) years relevant experience working in health services research environment
  • Experience working with data at the Institute of Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) either internally (analyst or student) or as a collaborating researcher or a research staff
  • Demonstrated training and experience in quantitative study design, methodology and advanced data analysis techniques
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 Suite (Teams, SharePoint, Word, PPT, Outlook, Excel)
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment
  • Familiarity with the Canadian/Ontario healthcare system, particularly primary health care, an asset
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and oral
  • Resourcefulness and demonstrated ability to learn and adapt quickly
  • Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines, prioritize tasks, and coordinate work based on deliverables
  • Proven record in successful grant applications, an asset
  • Proficiency in a statistical software (e.g., R, SAS), an asset
  • Fluent in French and English, an asset
