Function Summary Under the direction and leadership of the Infection Prevention and
Control (IPAC) Manager, the IPAC Nurse contributes to the provision of quality
care in a safe environment for the patients/residents and staff at all sites of Bruyère Continuing Care by
participating in multiple aspects of the IPAC program. Responsibilities of the IPAC nurse include: - Participating in the planning, development, organization, implementation and evaluation of the Hospital wide infection prevention and control program
- Implementing prevention strategies including education/consultation for staff, physicians and hospital departments
- Performing surveillance and data analysis
- Identifying trends/patterns and managing investigations of infections
- Maintaining compliance with all regulatory requirements
He/She is committed to living the Mission and Values of Bruyère Continuing Care. He/She is committed to patient and resident safety, on-going learning and continuous quality improvement. Required Qualifications - Certification of competency from the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Minimum of five (5) years experience in a clinical health setting, including two full time equivalent years in Infection Prevention & Control or five years experience in a clinical health care setting and a minimum of 80 hours of IPAC Canada-endorsed infection prevention & control courses
- Certification in Infection Prevention & Control (CIC) - required within five (5) years of hire and certification to be maintained
- Fluent in English and French (verbal, written and read). (Candidates who do not meet this language requirement are eligible to apply for this position and may be considered if there are no other suitable applicants who meet this requirement.)
- Working knowledge of pharmacology, specifically antimicrobials
- Advanced medical terminology
- Advanced computer skills (e.g. Word, Excel)
- Experience and/or training in Principles of adult education is an asset
Key Competencies of the position- Knowledgeable in current regulations, standards, best practices and recommendations for infection prevention and control (IPAC) issues.
- Ability to interpret and apply best practices and/or evidence-based guidelines in IPAC to current practice setting
- Keeps apprised of the latest research and developments in infectious disease prevention and infection control, both locally and nationally
- Contributes to the development and implementation of the department’s mandate and operating procedures by taking a significant role in the identification of new projects and processes that fit the program’s goals
- Demonstrates infection prevention and control knowledge and skills, specifically in:
- surveillance/epidemiology
- outbreak management
- auditing of IPAC processes and procedures
- infectious diseases
- microbiology
- patient care practices
- risk management and mitigation
- cleaning, disinfection and sterilization
- safety and occupational health
- basic pharmacology, particularly use of antimicrobials
- Knowledge of patient care processes and practices
- Knowledge of data presentation and report writing
