Background Information:

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are a group of 20 communicable diseases that are estimated to affect more than 1 billion people worldwide. NTDs can cause debilitation, disability, malnutrition, disfigurement, social discrimination, and even death. These diseases—also known as diseases of poverty—are endemic to nations, regions and communities where access to health services is minimal, malnutrition is high, and inadequate housing and access to clean water and sanitation exist. NTDs are barriers to both reaching the Sustainable Development Goals and to sustainable poverty reduction, and they are a significant global health concern.

The Canadian Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases (CNNTD), led by effect:hope and the Bruyère Research Institute, seeks to bring together NGO’s, researchers, private sector, academia, and public sector representatives to garner support amongst Canadian stakeholders, in order for Canada to increase its contribution towards the control and elimination of NTDs. The CNNTD Advocacy and Policy Officer will be based in Ottawa at Bruyère Research Institute (BRI) in Ottawa and work in collaboration with the chair of the CNNTD. The primary role of this individual will be to build support for increased Canadian involvement in the global effort to control NTDs. This position reports to the leadership of the CNNTD.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and carry out advocacy strategies and serve as the primary liaison in Canada with partners and a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain relationships with partners and stakeholders within Canada and globally.
  • Advocate for increased awareness and attention on Neglected Tropical Diseases at meetings, conferences and forums within Ottawa and in other locations.
  • Develop and manage the CNNTD communication strategy.
  • Manage the CNNTD website and social media including Facebook and Twitter, and any other appropriate social media platforms.
  • Prepare briefs, policy materials and educational material for diverse audiences.
  • Financial management of the CNNTD, including preparing budgets, monitoring expenses, maintaining a record of expenses and income, and completion of expenditure reports.
  • Facilitate effective functioning of the CNNTD Steering Committee including organization of regular in-person and virtual meetings.
  • Complete narrative reports documenting the activities, outputs and outcomes of CNNTD activities and strategies.
  • Write funding proposals for the CNNTD.
  • Manage the tracking and analysis of current NTD data and policy progress.
  • Supervise volunteers, students and vendors.

  • Strong verbal, written, listening and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple projects with limited supervision.
  • Knowledge and interest in global health issues.
