About this position The BRI is seeking an experienced individual to work directly with Dr. Barbara Farrell and her research team on her Deprescribing Guidelines program of research https://deprescribing.org/. This position will be 22.5 hours – 37.5 hours week depending on the successful candidate and availability of funding. The majority of the incumbent’s time will be spent on three related research projects focused on:
- Prescribing Cascades
- Public Education about Medication Management and Deprescribing
- Evaluating Implementation of a Deprescribing Framework for Ontario Long-Term Care.
Prescribing cascades occur when additional medications are prescribed to treat side-effects of other medication. The incumbent will be involved in conducting and analyzing stakeholder focus groups to determine feasibility of interventions to change behavior around the investigation and management of prescribing cascades. The public education project will involve in-person or virtual education with seniors to help them participate in shared decision-making conversations; the incumbent will be involved in analyzing before/after surveys and a conducting/analyzing a focus group about the effectiveness of the workshops. The third project continues work to develop a Deprescribing framework for long-term care using the Behaviour Change Wheel; the incumbent will help design an evaluation approach to understand the impact of ongoing planning activities with stakeholders. Additional projects may be funded that involve interviews with frail seniors experiencing isolation as a result of the COVID-19 self-isolation policies. The successful candidate will be granted independence and latitude in accomplishing assignments, and will contribute to all aspects of each project’s research and administrative activities. This will include submissions to Research Ethics Boards, recruiting research participants, data collection and organization (including facilitating focus groups), data analysis, and preparing research reports and other dissemination materials. Additional team members include a communications/event manager, a pharmacist content expert and periodic pharmacy research students. Main Duties and Responsibilities:- Preparing, supervising and/or assisting with the preparation of key documents including project reports, manuscripts for publication, abstracts, scientific posters and presentations
- Complete and coordinate submission of applications, amendments, and annual reports to multiple Research Ethics Boards, with input from Investigators
- Ensure study protocols adhere to ethical guidelines
- Perform and interpret literature searches; create and maintain reference databases
- Consulting/interacting with key stakeholders, including investigators, collaborators, project staff, and implementation teams, for clarification, input and feedback
- Recruit participants and conduct interviews and focus groups with members of the public, patients, family members, health care providers and stakeholders
- Conduct analysis of data, including organizing and analyzing qualitative data under the supervision of the Principal Investigator
- Working closely with project team to ensure consistency of project objectives
- Provide leadership and support to students
Required skills and experience:- Masters degree or equivalent combination of degrees/experience with experience in a research environment
- Clinical training and knowledge of medications an asset
- Excellent working knowledge of research terminology and experience in health care
- Experience with qualitative research methods (data collection and analysis)
- High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and data analysis programs (e.g., NVivo)
- Exceptional communication skills, including writing, editing and oral communication (in English)
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, manage overlapping projects and phases, and meet deadlines
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills, including ability to adapt to a dynamic project environment, manage multiple tasks and work in a virtual environment (teleconferences, e-meetings and video conferencing)
- Bilingual in both official languages is an asset (working language of the project team is English)
