The Bruyère Research Institute (Bruyère RI) supports investigators who contribute to a better, more responsive health care system that delivers the best care to patients and families. The Institute is a proud partner of Bruyère Continuing Care, the University of Ottawa and others and provides solutions to improve the health and health care of aging and frail Canadians. The Institute’s research focuses primarily on evidence, health system evaluation, brain health, geriatrics and rehabilitation, global health, and primary care.

As part of the global health focus at BRI, this project addresses COVID-19 and neglected tropical disease (NTD) programs in Sub-Saharan Africa.

As COVID-19 continues to spread globally, questions have emerged about how national neglected tropical disease (NTD) programs can adapt and safely resume mass drug administration (MDA) activities and maintain community trust during the pandemic. The community drug distributors (CDDs) are critical to the success of national NTD programs and are involved in some COVID-19 response efforts across sub-Saharan Africa. Despite the crucial role of CDDs, little is known about how COVID-19 will impact their work in NTD programmes, both in terms of community acceptance and trust, as well as their potential role in COVID-19 response activities. Therefore, the global NTD community needs to understand their needs and experiences; and discover how health systems can support them to effectively, efficiently, and safely carry out their duties amid COVID-19. Our project will aim to understand these needs and experiences and use them to inform modifications to existing training and support measures to assist CDDs as they adapt to carrying out MDA under new challenges and constraints presented by COVID-19. Specifically, we will be looking at Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. By designing and implementing strategic adaptations to existing training and support strategies, CDDs will be more equipped to carry out their work. They will be protected from distress and burnout exacerbated by challenges presented by COVID-19. The immediate benefit of this work is to enable MDA to resume safely, sustain high coverage, and effectively mobilize a valuable workforce to assist with COVID-19 response activities. The long-term benefit is greater resilience and well-being among CDDs and greater potential for rapid and effective integration into other NTD programs in a more resilient health system.

Working with an international team of researchers and collaborators, we will carry out this project in Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana.
